Japan is known as a nation of heavy smokers. In recent years, smoking rates have dropped have caused a massive toll on the nation’s health bill. Japan is a contracting party to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and now must move towards greater control of smoking across the country. Japan’s tobacco use started 50 years ago according to the report, “Tobacco Free Japan – Recommendations for Tobacco Control Policy 2004” prepared by a group of medical and tobacco-related specialists from Japan and the United States (US) (see http://www.tobaccofree.jp).
