Fortune magazine ran an article in June 1999 examining why CEOs fail and concluded that it is rarely because of lack of ‘smarts’ or vision, most unsuccessful CEOs stumble because of one fatal shortcoming – the failure to put the right people in the right jobs and the related failure of not fixing people problems in time. In an attempt to take the pulse of what organizations in Asia Pacific have been doing, SHL conducted a survey spanning more than 400 experienced business managers across 22 different industry sectors. When asked about the biggest internal problems, “difficulty hiring the right people” and “poor performance of existing employees” came out on top – by a long way.
