German Airline Lufthansa Axes 70% of India-based Crew

Of the 140 India-based cabin crew, German mega-carrier Lufthansa has axed jobs of 103 members. The move comes after a year of having flights restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, it is only running 10 flights as compared to the 56 weekly flights it used to run between German and Indian metro cities. Reportedly, some of the laid-off members are planning a protest at Delhi Aerocity.

According to reports, Lufthansa spokesperson informed the employees that the company is not extending the fixed-term contracts of its India-based crew of the Delhi-operated flights. Such measures are being carried out across Germany and other parts of Europe too, under the financial pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In another report, it was revealed that the international carrier was willing to absorb all "associated premium" during this period but the Indian union revoked the consent in December. Lufthansa was able to reach agreements with those Indian cabin crew who had unlimited contracts. The inability to reach a consensus forced the company's hand to cull the posts, said the spokesperson.
