Today organizations identify individual competencies at every level which include preferred behaviors, skills, knowledge, and attributes that differentiate brilliant and superior performance from the usual. Generally, competencies are mapped during recruitment, training and development, succession planning and promotion, and organizational development analysis. Different methods are utilized to map competencies and one of them is the Critical Incident Technique (CIT). It’s a common method comprising of collecting data by witnessing or describing incidents that divulge critical aspects of performance. The detailed notes and scrutiny of works and procedures, whether technical like working on machinery/equipment or human such as interacting with colleagues, concerned in critical incidents that happen on the job, provide new insights about the job and the job holder.
