Here are some conversations that I, as an HR professional, have encountered from line managers.

‘Do you remember this senior manager we recruited about three months back? I don’t know the reason, but some how I feel he is not looking charged up. Can you call him and have a talk?”

“The head of plant four has not been meeting dispatch schedules in the last quarter, can you counsel him and push for better performance at least next quarter? It will carry more weight if you communicate.”

“I have been observing in the last few meetings, these bunch of guys do not know how to work as a cross functional team. HR must do something for these guys.”

“Today we had a bad scene between quality and production managers during the review meeting. It was a terrible show down. I think you need to intervene and help them resolve the conflict”

While it is too evident that many people issues need to be jointly addressed by line managers and HR managers, the effectiveness of such collaboration can be enhanced through the way the whole relationship gets built.
