1988-batch IAS Rajiv Bansal is new Air India CMD

Air India gets senior bureaucrat Rajiv Bansal as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Air India on Thursday. Bansal, who is a 1988-batch IAS officer of Nagaland cadre, is presently the additional secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He is replacing Ashwani Lohani who completes his one-year tenure as the head of Air India.

 

Bansal is taking this position for the second time.  In August 2017, he served for three months as Air India's interim CMD. At that time too, he replaced Lohani, who was appointed as the Chairman of the Railway Board.

 

This decision follows the announcement made by the government about bidding for the 100 percent stake sale of the national carrier reeling under the debt of over Rs 60,000 crore. 

Important highlights on the new CMD of Air India:

 

• A civil engineer from IIT, Delhi in 1986, he holds a diploma in finance from ICFAI, Hyderabad, and an executive master degree in International Business from IIFT, New Delhi.

 

• With his roots in the state of Haryana, he has played an important role in internet governance, Aadhaar, and digital payments while serving in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

 

• During his 30 years of service, he has been in critical roles including Joint Secretary, Department of Heavy Industries, Director, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Secretary, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.
