COVID-19 outbreak: Walt Disney Co. to furlough non-essential employees

Walt Disney Co. has decided to furlough some of non-essential US employees after the temporary closure of production, theme parks, cruise lines and retail stores due to the coronavirus crisis.

Despite this, the media and entertainment conglomerate has vowed to pay full benefits for all affected employees. All these workers will remain Disney employees during the furlough period and will get full healthcare benefits.

Disney will pay the cost of employee healthcare premiums.

The company notified its employees that it would temporarily dismiss employees “whose jobs aren’t necessary at this time” starting on April 19, 2020.

"However, with no clear indication of when we can restart our businesses, we’re forced to make the difficult decision to take the next step and furlough employees, whose jobs aren’t necessary at this time", the Burbank-based entertainment giant said in an official statement.

"Over the last few weeks, mandatory decrees from government officials have shut down a majority of our businesses."
