Tech Mahindra to Axe BPO jobs by 5k in FY21

IT major Tech Mahindra is planning to reduce its business process services (BPS) staff by 5,000 in FY 2020-21 with artificial intelligence and automation completing a large chunk of work.

In the technology sector, BPS, with its inception in call centres of the past, employs a large number of people who handle processes for foreign clients across varied time zones.

Tech Mahindra had reportedly reduced nearly 2,500 people in the December quarter, and attributed the majority of job loss to the BPS vertical.

"…what has happened is I used to have around 43,000 employees at the end of FY20, at the end of FY21, I expect about 38,000 employees in BPS. But that is because the productivity has increased and the revenue has also gone up," chief executive and managing director C P Gurnani had told PTI.

He added also added that the trend of staff reduction may not continue in the coming months and the staff numbers will stabilise, with revenues continuing to grow. During December quarter, Tech Mahindra had reported a growth of 11 per cent in BPS revenues.

With current stress on improved productivity, each employee gets more tasks completed aided by a chatbot developed in-house.

A company official reportedly said that automation, analytics along with artificial intelligence are critical for customer operations and added that the company is using revenues for automation to deliver desired outcomes for the customers.

Reportedly, Tech Mahindra has given up rental space in the past few months since the beginning of the pandemic but the gains have not been very high. The company is still maintaining the offices with hopes of a return of 40 per cent of the workers.
