Govt Announces 3,500+ Jobs For Persons With Benchmark Disabilities

The government of India has announced 3,566 posts in the central government offices for persons with benchmark disabilities. Said posts have also been informed to be suitable for new categories of persons with disabilities such as dwarfism, acid attack victims, muscular dystrophy, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, mental illness and multiple disabilities.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities announced that these posts have been identified for people with benchmark disabilities (disability of 40 per cent and above) under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD). The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said the objective is to extend the scope for employment for persons with benchmark disabilities in government establishments.

A list of 2,973 posts was last identified and notified in 2013 in terms of the repealed Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunity, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995. Now, 593 new posts have been added.

The RPwD 2016 replaced the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995. The Act fulfills the obligations to the United National Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), that India is a signatory of.

According to the RPwD Act 2016, enacted on December 28, 2016, and came into force from April 19, 2017, disability is defined based on an evolving and dynamic concept.
