Mahashay Dharmpal of MDH Spices Passes Away at 98

'Mahashay' Dharampal Gulati, the owner of MDH spices passed away today at the age of 98.

 

As per reports, he was undergoing treatment at Chanan Devi Hospital for the past few weeks and suffered a cardiac arrest.

 

Famously called Dadaji, Gulati was a fifth grade school dropout. He was known for making regular daily rounds of factories, markets and dealers even on Sundays to check if everything was in order.

 

Born on March 27, 1923, in Sialkot (present-day Pakistan), he dropped out of school and set up a small business with his father's help in 1937. After working through many businesses, which included soaps, hardware, cloth and rice trading, he finally joined his father’s spices business called ‘Mahashian Di Hatti’.

 

He came to India in September 1947 with only Rs.1,500. According to the company’s website, he purchased a Tonga for Rs.650/- and drove it from New Delhi Railway Station to Qutab Road and Karol Bagh to Bara Hindu Rao at two Annas sawari for few days. He later bought a small wooden shop at Ajmal Khan Road, Karol Bagh, New Delhi and started his family business of ground spices called Mahashian Di Hatti of Sialkot “DEGGI MIRCH WALE“.
