You Are What You Eat!

Similar to an organisation consulting an OD specialist for people and process development, it is equally important for the business to consult a nutritionist and a wellness coach to design a healthier lifestyle for the workforce.


Apart from being hailed as the place that caters to different tastes and tummies of the people in an organisation, office canteens are also a great place for savouring gossip and grapevine. Satisfying the palate of a diverse workforce always stands out as a big challenge, and more so in Indian organisations. Boredom with the food at one's canteen is almost global, and yet, the canteen is seen as a hustling and bustling place, not for the food, but for the à la carte emotions in the air.

We are what we eat. And how, where, when, why, and with whom we eat influences our health in the long run as well. Our body is a replica of Mother Earth in terms of its composition, and our cycle of 'thought-action-feelings' is a product of the food we eat. As worthy professionals, we all strive to 'Speak Effectively & Work Efficiently.' And we are aware that while efficiency signifies doing things right, effectiveness means doing the right things. 

 

Excellence in one's chosen field is a product of character, competence, and confidence. We experience success in accomplishing a task when it is fuelled by passionate performance. The emotion churned out by 'perseverance for excellence' is pure 'ecstasy.' And the greater the stamina, the better is one's voyage in their pursuit for excellence. Hence, it is imperative for organisations to work on providing nutritious and healthy food for its folks. If you observe, kids are naturally blissful because they are in absolute equilibrium. They are neither polluted by overindulgence in food, nor are they judgmental about any past experience. As adults we tend to forget certain basics in life, and hence encounter imbalances that shake us off the grid.

 

The goals for self-development 

 

The ultimate goal in self-development is - Manasa (Thoughts), Vaacha (Speech), and Karmana (Actions) being in sync. That is, getting to a state of being wherein we are able to 'do what we speak' and 'speak what we think.' This is a pure state of consciousness in which we are genuinely compassionate and are just our true self without any ambiguity. As we know, our present is a derivative of our past, and our future will be a derivative of our present. Hence, it is important to live in the present, and lead a happy, peaceful, and balanced life. However, it is prudent that we learn from our past and move forward as well. 

 

Our ancient Vedic wisdom prescribes food on the basis of the work being done by us. As per Vedic Science, the food we eat can be categorised as Tamasic, Rajasic, and Sattvic. Examples of Tamasic food are highly spiced meat, alcohol, and other intoxicants. The food in this category are difficult to digest and they fuel extreme emotions in us, which eventually causes severe imbalance in our system. If you want to equate the emotions associated with Tamasic food with colour shaded cards, it would be all the darker shades. 


Rajasic food can be associated with moderate colour shades. Example of such food are herbs, spices, coffee, tea, moderately spiced meat, dairy products, chilly, salt, and sweets. Such types of food too evoke strong emotions in us, but, is not as intense as Tamasic food. Considering today's world, this food serves our purpose to operate in the present day world and pursue our passion. As we mostly eat Rajasic food, it is natural for us to sometimes get tempted towards Tamasic food. One should do regular physical exercises to ensure the Rajasic food is properly digested.

 

Sattvic food are fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, sprouts, honey, mild herbs etc. This type of food is very easy to digest, and hence, keeps our body clutter-free and clean. Sattvic food is best for those who wish to attain higher consciousness and absolute control over mind and body. The colours associated with this type of food is a lot more refined and is of highly light shades. 

 

If one is having emotional imbalances, the primary solution is to control their diet and carry out a regular physical exercise to burn away the unwanted shades of energy stored within their system. You would definitely not want to make the mistake of feeding Sattvic food to your Sales Team and Tamasic food to your Learning & Development Team - because we are what we eat!
