Desk Plants can reduce Workplace stress

Feeling stressed at workplace ?

Keep a green plant at your desk to reduce its intensity, suggested a recent study.

The study conducted by the University of Hyogo in Awaji, Japan, examined the psychological and physiological changes in the employees before and after keeping an indoor plant on their desks. The experiment was done with sixty-three workers across different offices in Japan.

The researchers measured psychological stress using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The data revealed that an overwhelming majority of participants had much lower pulse rates with a desk plant in comparison to without one.

The study was carried out in two parts. The first was a control period where the employees didn’t have plants on their desks, while the second had an intervention period where employees were asked to tend to a small plant.

Participants were offered a choice of six different types of plants, namely, air plants, foliage plants,   bonsai plants, san pedro cactus, kokedama, or echeveria. Researchers found that all types of plants helped in the reduction of stress levels.
