Qantas to cut 6,000 jobs amid pandemic

Qantas plans to slash at least 6,000 jobs and ground 100 of its aircraft for at least a year, as a part of drastic measures to cope with coronavirus pandemic.

The Australian airline will keep 15,000 more workers on extended furloughs, especially those involved in international operations.

Recently, Qantas canceled most international flights until October after the government said Australia’s borders may remain shut until next year.

“We have to position ourselves for several years when revenue will be much lower,” Chief Executive Alan Joyce said in a statement detailing a three-year plan.

“And that means becoming a smaller airline in the short term. Most airlines will have to restructure in order to survive, which also means they’ll come through this leaner and more competitive."
