Ola lays off 1,400 employees amid pandemic

Cab aggregator Ola has decided to layoff nearly 1,400 employees from various segments as coronavirus pandemic has hit revenues severely in the last two months.

In an email to employees, CEO Bhavish Aggarwal made it clear that the prognosis ahead for our business is very unclear and uncertain. The impact of the crisis is going to take a long time for people to go out and about like before.

"The COVID crisis continues to unfold all around us causing unprecedented economic and social destruction. It has also become evident that the coronavirus will not be eliminated any time soon. We will rather have to learn to live with the virus and resultant implications. In these circumstances, today I write to all of you with the toughest decision I have ever taken – the need to downsize our organization and let go of 1400 of our valued employees."

Aggarwal also assured that this is just a one-time exercise and no such COVID-related cuts will be done in future.

He further stated "Our revenue has come down 95% over the past 2 months. Most importantly, this crisis has affected the livelihoods of millions of our drivers and their families across India and our international geographies."

Ola has taken various initiatives during these trying times to serve its drivers, citizens and the nation at large.
